Update On The Medi Van

The Chappy Community Center

WE ARE SO EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THIS SERVICE TO OUR CHAPPY RESIDENTS

CHAPPAQUIDDICK Mini-MEDIVAN PROCEDURES

Thanks to a cooperative effort by The Edgartown Council on Aging, Vineyard Transit Authority (VTA), and the Chappaquiddick Ferry, a minivan will now be available on Tuesdays to pick up eligible individuals at their homes on Chappy. The Chappy Minivan will deliver them to the Steamship Authority to catch the VTA Medivan to Boston hospitals or the Sandwich OCB office and pick them up in the afternoon to return to Chappy.

Individuals requesting the Chappy Minivan must meet the age and/or disability requirements set out in the VTA Medivan Procedures.

How do I request a Chappy pickup by the Chappy Minivan?
Complete the VTA Medivan Service Form (AVAILABLE HERE) and return it to VTA. Call the VTA (508-693-9440 ext 1) and make your reservation for the VTA off-island Medivan according to VTA guidelines (Boston medical or OCB trips)Call the Edgartown Council on Aging (508-627-4368) to request a home pickup by the Chappy Minivan. This must be done by 1:00 pm the DAY before your trip, and you are urged to make your reservations well in advance. The Chappy Minivan driver will contact you the day before your trip to confirm your trip. You will not be picked up if we cannot confirm your trip. When the Medivan returns from Boston, the Chappy Minivan will be waiting to take you home. If, for any reason, you are not returning as planned, please be sure to let your driver know and notify the Council on Aging.

What does it cost?
You will pay VTA for the Boston or OCB Medivan service.
$40 round-trip for Boston medical appointments, including ferry ticket$20 round-trip for OCB medical appointments, including ferry ticket.
The Chappy Minivan service is free, and there is no cost for the 6:00 am Chappy Ferry. A Chappy Ferry passenger ticket IS REQUIRED for the RETURN TRIP ONLY.

Important Items:
On the day of your trip, you must be ready for the Chappy Minivan to pick you up at 5:15 am. If necessary, this will allow the driver multiple pickups in time to catch the Chappy Ferry at 6:00. The Minivan WILL NOT WAIT if you are not ready. The Chappy Minivan must meet the VTA Medivan at Steamship Authority no later than 6:30 am.

VTA requires cancellations to be made by the Friday before your scheduled Tuesday trip. Make sure to notify the Council on Aging of your cancellation as well.

Please be aware that the Chappy Minivan is equipped to carry one wheelchair, as is the VTA Medivan. Please be sure to consider whether you need assistance for this trip, as it is a long day. If you have specific limitations or need a helper to come with you, please discuss this with the Council on Aging.

UMass Medical Student-Rural Scholars focus group

Join us on October 31st, 2-4 PM

  If you would participate in the focus group or in just be in the audience, please contact
Karen Lento Gazarian at karenlentogazarian@gmail.com or call her at (508) 939-0066.
 Please let your voice be heard!

The Rural Scholars would like to visit Chappy and conduct a focus group of Chappy residents who fall into the above categories. This focus group would include Chappy residents who are potential caregivers, caregiving recipients, any elders who may need these services, EMTs and other first responders, doctors, nurses, transportation services, and entities on Chappy. Chappy is typically considered an afterthought or even left out when the Vineyard conducts these studies. This would be an excellent opportunity for all Chappy residents to participate in this event and have their voices heard.

HISTORY:

Each year for the past 10+ years, the Dukes County Health Council (DCHC) has sponsored a study of great importance to the residents of Martha’s Vineyard in conjunction with a group of visiting medical and nursing students from the University of Massachusetts. This group of (8) eight students visits the island, conducts interviews, and prepares a written report which they then present to the public. These students are called Rural Scholars as they typically see rural communities. A few of the past conducted studies here on the Vineyard include the following:

• Tick-borne diseases, Isolation and its impact on our Elders, Island Food Insecurity, and Dementia Services.

THIS YEAR’S PROJECT:

This year the DCHC has selected the proposed study submitted by Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard (HAMV), which will be for the Rural Scholars:

• to conduct a study of the island’s existing capacity to provide in-home care (health and support services) to residents who are disabled and older adults;

• to identify barriers to the expansion of existing services and how to overcome those barriers;

• to include a focus on workforce issues and opportunities among the island’s caregiving workforce,

• the students will conduct interviews and focus groups of current family and professional caregivers on assessing their priorities, needs, and perspectives.

• the students will also conduct research to identify other promising “best practice” models around the country and explore possible regulatory and legislative changes directly tied to in-home care among Home and Community-Based programs at the state and national levels.

This project will also be in collaboration with the MV Hospital, Elder Services of the Cape and Islands, the four island Councils on Aging, MV Community Services, Center for Living, Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, Vineyard Village at Home, and private home care agencies.

Let’s End Lyme Disease

Casey Bridgeford and Gerhart Keller with Care Access will be presenting. Care Access is a healthcare company that directly connects clinical trial opportunities from traditional research sites to communities. Our mission is to make cutting-edge therapies and interventions available to all individuals, stressing diversity and inclusion in research
(see flyer below). This is not a 2 Hour presentation, you can pop in at your leisure and ask Casey and Gerhart any questions you may have.
